What our Sixth Form Students Say

Sixth Form at Hunterhouse – What Our Students Say

The advantages of studying A-Levels at Hunterhouse:

Hunterhouse provides a wide range of subjects that other schools may not offer, you can study new subjects which are not available at GCSE such as Criminology. Your class teacher will be there to support and guide you through the new subject. Hunterhouse is a friendly environment. Staff and students are able to build relationships through more frequent class time and smaller class sizes.  Being a relatively small school, we have around 200 students in Sixth Form. Sixth Form students are allowed to be more independent having study periods, brilliant Sixth Form recreation areas and lunch room and being allowed to go off campus for lunch.

The pastoral care team are always available to talk with you about any worries or concerns you are having both inside and outside school. Hunterhouse also provides a Student Hub where students can go and take time out when they are feeling overwhelmed and need time to reflect and prepare themselves for the remainder of the day. Hunterhouse also provides a counselling service. This is open to anyone who feels they may benefit from it. Teachers are always willing to help you with your work, whether you call into their room to ask a question or email them to ask for help. Studying A Levels has given me a deeper understanding of my learning and has enabled me to demonstrate this understanding in classes and in assessments.  However, if you are ever struggling with anything or have any questions, it is very easy to go and ask your teacher for help, at any time. The teachers are always willing to help you and give up their time in order for you to reach your full potential.

Sixth Form students have their own recreational area, so if you need somewhere to relax, talk or have lunch after an intensive study period there are great facilities available and it’s a really good place to socialise with many of your classmates.  Sixth Former students can also leave school at lunchtime to go to the local shops to buy something nice to eat.

At Hunterhouse College there are many interesting subjects to choose from and you are able to find out what is involved before choosing your favourite. Studying a BTEC course along with A levels enables you to balance your workload and can take away the pressure of sitting exams, as you can focus on completing coursework assessments during the year.

Making revision notes during study periods throughout Sixth Form means that you won’t feel as overwhelmed when exam season comes around, as there is a big step up in the amount of content from GCSE to A-level.  I would also recommend doing as many past paper questions as you can to prepare for exams as this really helps get in the exam mind set and shows where your strengths and weaknesses lie.

I have always found that studying with friends is a useful way to share understanding with your peers, teaching and learning from one another can help everyone involved and figure out any uncertainties. This is also important as it helps to develop a good work ethic in a group environment which is crucial to creating a support system among friends to encourage success and help in facing the challenges of A Levels.

Organisation and time management are the keys to stay on top of deadlines and find the balance between A Level academic work and life outside school. Make lists of all of the tasks you need to achieve each day and to work through the list, ticking off each item, when completed.  That means you will find it easier to meet deadlines, stay focused and are able to manage your time wisely.
