PE & Games

The Physical Education department at Hunterhouse College provides a fun and stimulating learning environment for all to enjoy, regardless of ability. The wide range of activities on offer means there is something to suit the interests of every individual. Through the medium of Physical Education, we place a strong emphasis on the learning of valuable life skills such as team work and co-operation; leadership and communication; tenacity and resilience.

There are lots of opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular sport in Hunterhouse College with clubs in Hockey, Netball, Badminton, Tennis, Swimming, Football, Athletics and Cross-country to name but a few. We provide many opportunities for our students to show their competitive side by running House Competitions in school and entering many teams in a wide range of inter-school sports competitions. Indeed, over the years we have experienced much success at District, Interprovincial and even All-Ireland level.

We boast fabulous indoor sports facilities, including a large sports hall and fitness suite as well as a well-equipped hall which is used for gymnastics, dance, netball and indoor games activities in PE & Games classes. There are two all-weather pitches at Hunterhouse. These are used mainly for hockey but during the summer are marked out as a 300m athletics track. There are 8 tennis courts and 4 outdoor netball courts. They are used for netball in the winter months and during the summer term for tennis. Other off-site facilities used on a regular basis include Laurelhill Sportsplex Astroturf hockey pitch, Olympia Leisure Centre & Lisburn Racquets Club.

We offer students at Key Stage 4 & 5 the opportunity to further develop their love for sport and physical activity by taking up GCSE Physical Education and BTEC Sport. Students undertaking these courses further develop their knowledge learned at Key Stage 3 by studying topics such as the effects of exercise on the body’s systems, nutrition & leading a healthy lifestyle. They also have the opportunity to develop and analyse their own performance in a range of sports.
