Sociology
Sociology is offered as an A Level subject in Hunterhouse College, using the AQA linear specification. It is a popular subject for students who are considering careers in the public service e.g. social work, the Probation Service and Psychology, as well as those who see their futures in the private sector e.g. public relations.
Studying Sociology offers insights into social and cultural issues. It enables students to develop a multi-perspective and critical approach to understanding a broad range of social concerns. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own experience of the social world in which they live. Through discussion and debate they develop skills which enhance their ability to participate more effectively in adult life.
What skills are learnt by Sociology students?
A number of skills will be developed including:
- How to use evidence to support arguments
- How to investigate facts and use deduction
- How to present viewpoints fluently
- How to take responsibility for individual learning
Course Content
The course content for Year One is two taught units:
Unit 1 Families and Households
Unit 2 Education with Sociological Methods
(Students will undertake a free-standing AS qualification comprised of two written examinations in May).
In their second year of study students take a further two units:
Unit 3 Beliefs in Society
Unit 4 Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods
(Students will undertake three written examinations based on the work covered over the two years, to achieve an A Level qualification).
