Mathematics

We believe that Maths is one of the most important subjects that you will study at school.

Therefore, we try to make learning fun and relevant.

Students in year 8 are taught in mixed ability classes where we look to build on their prior knowledge and experience from primary school. They have lots of opportunity to ask questions and there’s support available if they need it. Students learn from each other and working together is encouraged. Mini ‘Show Me’ boards give instant feedback to teachers. Independent learning in Maths is also important to build confidence, cement knowledge and practise new techniques and concepts.

As students move through Key stage 3, we begin to lightly stream the classes which allows students to be taught at a pace and level that suits their individual needs. We Introduce them to new ideas which challenge them to problem solve and think logically.

At KS4 we have 5 classes that follow the CCEA GCSE course. Smaller class sizes allow us to ensure students follow the correct Modules, maximising their chances of achieving their best grade.

We encourage our students to study GCSE Further Maths and, in the Sixth Form, to take Maths for A-level.

We use ICT where appropriate to enhance students’ learning with an Interactive Whiteboard in each Maths classroom. We use videos, interactive resources, MyMaths, Google classroom and a variety of relevant websites.

Maths is one of the best subjects to develop your analytical, research and problem-solving skills. Not only will studying maths help give you the knowledge to tackle scientific, mechanical, coding and abstract problems, it will also help you develop logic to tackle everyday issues like planning projects and managing budgets.

Year 8 students with Min Show Me boards.

Year 9 students on an algebra treasure hunt.

Year 10 students finding the height of the redwood trees using trigonometry.
