Music

The Music Department is a busy and exciting place at Hunterhouse College where students of all ages and abilities are encouraged to strive for musical excellence. We offer a diverse and inclusive programme of activities, through our curriculum and extensive extracurricular programme.

There are currently two full-time classroom teachers, Miss Flanagan (Head of Department), Mrs Carlisle and ten peripatetic tutors. These tutors provide tuition in Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet, Horn, Baritone, Trombone, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Drum Kit, Guitar (acoustic and electric), Piano, Harp and Singing. The school owns a number of orchestral instruments which may be borrowed by students taking instrumental lessons, subject to availability. Lessons take place throughout the day and after school and operate on a rotating timetable; although the teaching day remains the same each week, your lesson will be at a different time.  Most pupils aim to take a practical exam each year.  We currently enter pupils for ABRSM, Trinity Classical and Pop, Rock School and London College of Music exams.

There are two class teaching rooms, a music technology room with 15 iMacs and four practice rooms in the department.

At Hunterhouse College, everyone in Key Stage 3 studies Music. It’s a course which focuses on practical and creative musical skills, as well as covering theoretical and historical content. Schemes also cater for the development of skills and knowledge necessary for study at GCSE level. Topics covered include:

Year 8:  Graphic Score, Programme Music, Set Works, Introduction to Theory and Composition (incl. using Sibelius), Keyboard and Recorder, Singing, Instruments of the Orchestra and Music Technology.

Year 9: African Drumming, Theory, Video Game Music, Irish Music and Folk, Set Works, Repeated Patterns, Keyboard and Recorder and Music Technology.

Year 10: Ukulele, Blues, Pop Music, Keyboard, Song Composition, Film Music and Leitmotif, Festive Music, Ensemble Performance and Music Technology.

Music Theory

Music Theory classes are delivered free of charge on Tuesdays after school, to support KS3, instrumental and vocal lessons, and GCSE and A Level Music.

Extra-curricular musical activities flourish at Hunterhouse College. Each one is open to any interested student and we simply ask for genuine enthusiasm and commitment. The activities on offer are intended to provide access for all pupils, including total beginners, in all areas of music and also pathways into music careers for those with higher ability.

The Orchestra rehearses once a week and performs at concerts and Prize Events. Smaller groups and ensembles perform as the ‘band’ in school Musical productions and at our Carol Service and Spring Concerts. Students who enjoy singing are encouraged to join the Junior Choir (Years 8-10) and Senior Choir (Years 11-14). The choirs sing at the annual Carol Service, the Spring Concert, and other events and formal occasions (e.g. Prize Events) throughout the year. The Ulster Youth Choir give a workshop each year to the Senior Choir members. Students then have the opportunity to audition for the Ulster Youth Training Choir and the Ulster Youth Choir; each year students from the choir are successful in their auditions to one of these two outstanding choirs. Students are encouraged to join the ukulele club, African drumming groups, jammers, jazz band as well as forming their own ensembles. Regular trips are organised during the year to Ulster Orchestra concerts and other professional musical performances.
