Performing Arts
In Year 8, Students enjoy drama once every two weeks. Across the year students explore topics such as Radio Drama, Murder Mystery, Pantomime, Scripted Performance and Improvisation.
In Years 9 to 10, Drama is integrated into the English Programme both through Classroom Drama and Drama Modules taken by each student. The forms taught include Role plays, Dance Drama, Mime, Improvisation and Script Writing as well as Scripted Drama.
In Years 11 and 12, students can elect to study BTEC First Award in Performing Arts. Through this excitingly designed course students explore dramatic text for performance and will be given the opportunity to display their acting skills in front of an invited audience.
From a developed understanding of dramatic technique and play making, all students will work collaboratively to create their own theatrical presentations, which will be performed to a target audience.
Anyone interested in costume design, set design or the technical aspects of theatre can also develop their skills on this all-encompassing programme of study.
In Year 13 and 14, students can study the GCE Drama and Theatre.
Students will learn about the influence of key practitioners and playwrights on theatrical performance styles and technique. They will develop a deeper and more refined understanding of acting skills and will develop independence in approaching character research and textual analysis.
Students will participate in a range of exciting performance opportunities throughout the year, where they will be given the opportunity to display their developing skills and techniques in many forms of theatrical performance in front of an invited audience.
School Plays
The Performing Arts department along with the help of Music heads up our annual school musical which is open to all members of the school, from Year 8 right through to Year 14. Rehearsals for this take place from September to the end of November every Thursday from 3.20pm to 7pm and at selected lunchtimes. Some extra weekend rehearsals are necessary in November.
To give our students the most valuable professional experience of working in the theatre we perform our school show every year at the Island Hall in Lisburn. Our most recent shows at this venue have included. ‘High School Musical’ (2014), ‘Back to the 80s’ (2015), ‘Bugsy Malone’ (2016) and ‘Fame’ (2017).
Junior Drama
Junior Drama is open to Year 8 to 10 and runs from January through March with a final performance event held at the end of March beginning of April.
National Theatre Competition
National Theatre Connections is a national theatre festival where new material, commissioned by the National Theatre is given to youth groups and schools to perform in their own venues. With the help of a director from the National Theatre the work is then transferred to a local theatre for a festival performance.
At Hunterhouse College we have performed at three of these festivals and hope to continue performing at these events on a biennial basis. Our last three performances at the Lyric Theatre include ‘Horizon’ (2014), ‘Remote’ (2015), ‘It Snows’ (2016).
Other Work
Within the Performing Arts department students also compete annually at the Ulster Dance and Fitness competition and the Northern Ireland Creative Movement & Aerobic Championships.
